As students at a historically black college being a part of one or many minority groups is not very uncommon. As a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual of transgender student, there can be added stress in being a part of a minority group that so many people do not agree with. With that in mind, the Rainbow Soul was created in 2002 to be a safe haven for LGBT students to come together and feel completely comfortable in a setting where acceptance is not always easy. "Rainbow Soul was started so that LGBT students can talk to each other and form bonds" stated Rainbow Soul advisor Claudia Leight.
Rainbow Soul meets every Thursday at 11 AM in Jenkins 107. Members of Rainbow Soul do not have to be a member of the homosexual community. According to Trina Scott, Treasurer of Rainbow Soul, it is hard to get supporters of our group who do not also happen to be gay, so anyone is welcome to attend meetings and events sponsored by Rainbow Soul.  "At our meetings we plan events and talk about ways to recruit new members, as well as issues going on in the world within the gay community." Scott said. With membership numbers around 30 students, a main goal of Rainbow Soul is to grow in numbers with dedicated members.
Though not to many events are set in stone, plans for a trip and other events are under way.  One on going activity that has been sponsored by Rainbow Soul is a movie night every two weeks. Last semester their three movie nights were so sucessful that the group would like to keep continue hosting them.
In an attempt to give LBGT students another place to feel comfortable and accepted, Ms. Leight has started a counseling group for gay students beginning Feb 17th from 3-4:30. The couseling was for gay studentsto come and talk completely confidentaily about their problems and issues. Students who are interested should go to the counseling center and sign up in advance.
