The Morgan State Bears football team kicked off spring practice on April 3rd in preparation for a tough 2002 season that has them on the road in seven out of 12 games.

New coach Don Hill may be excited about the 2002 Bears, who have a solid nucleus returning on offense and defense.  The offense ranked fourth overall in the MEAC last season.  Quarterback Bradshaw Littlejohn is generating a buzz with his cannon arm and Steve McNair (quarterback of the Tennessee Titans) like build.  Littlejohn is a transfer from Michigan State, where he played as a linebacker. Littlejohn, along with returning QB Lejomonick Washington could form a dangerous two-headed monster at that position.  There has also been talk about Washington moving to receiver. Also returning are wide receiver/running back/kick returner T.J. Stallings, running back William DeShazo and fullback Derrick Walters and the Bears undoubtedly are putting fear into opposing defenses in the upcoming season.

The Bears kick off the 2002 journey on the road against first-time foe Garner-Webb in Boling Springs, NC.  Garner Webb is a member of the newly formed Big South Conference.

The next week the Bears travel back up north to clash with their neighborhood rival Towson Tigers on September 5th.  The Tigers won in a thrilling overtime game last year.

The Bears will then travel to Cincinnati, OH for their first-ever appearance in the River Front Classic against the defending MEAC champion Florida A&M Rattlers, which feature QB Casey Prentice, a transfer from Texas Christian.

MSU finally gets to come home to Hughes Stadium September 21st to take on Northeast Conference opponent Monmouth University.  The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats then pay a visit October 5th, before the Bears hit the road again October 12th against the Aggies of North Carolina A&T and against their beltway rival Howard Bison on October 19th.

The Bears will then try to make the Delaware State Hornets their third Homecoming victim in a row on October 26th.

The Morris Brown Tigers out of Atlanta beat the Bears 24-22 last year down south, but will have to travel to the Bears stomping grounds this year on November 2nd.

Three more conference teams close out the grueling schedule, including the Norfolk State Spartans November 9th in Virginia, the South Carolina State Bulldogs November 16th in South Carolina and a sure sellout to end the season at home against the Hampton Pirates.

To get a sneak preview of Coach Hill’s squad, check out the annual Blue-Orange game, Saturday, April 27th at 2 p.m. at Hughes.  This game signifies the end to Spring practice.

With a re-structured coaching staff and solid core of players, fans should expect a significant change in the upcoming season, and the Bears could possibly be one of the most exciting teams to watch in the conference with Coach Hill’s pass oriented attack.
